His ancestral family came over in the Norman conquest, legend has it that Robert de Todeni the first Baron of the area stood on the castle mound pronouncing it a Belvoir which means beautiful view. A Norman import by the French-speaking invaders, but the native Anglo-Saxon population was unable to pronounce such a foreign word, preferring to call it "Beaver" a usage which persists today.
